Introducing the Companion App and Special Effect, a charity supporting young gamers with disabilities
Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!
And welcome to the first Clarke Award newsletter of 2021.
Regular readers may remember our promoting the The Companion App when it first successfully launched on Kickstarter last year, and I wanted to flag the excellent work the team have been doing recently mobilizing SF fans to raise money in support of Special Effect, an incredible charity that produces custom-made consoles and controllers for young people whose disabilities prevent them from enjoying gaming.
It’s often overlooked just how valuable gaming can be for cognitive development and inclusion within their peer group - and it’s a resource more vital than ever with lockdown restricting access to their usual networks.
Any donation you make - and whatever you can spare makes an enormous difference to Special Effect’s work - will unlock a 3-month membership to The Companion to say thank you. They publish 3 long-reads a week exploring the ideas and stories behind TV series and films - and they’re open to pitches from established writers and new talent alike.
Please consider doing your bit for this incredibly worthy cause by clicking this private link. The charity campaign will be running across the weekend for Clarke Award subscribers only, but I’m sure they won’t mind you sharing the link with your friends...
Thank you in advance for your support
